GIS Services

GIS is often a major component of many environmental planning, permitting, or remediation projects. To meet our clients’ GIS needs, JBR’s staff of GIS specialists draws on more than 50 years of combined experience to provide a wide range of services, from basic mapping of project areas for reports to CAD design and development.

JBR has experience creating maps and conducting analyses for air quality reports, Environmental Site Assessments, NEPA compliance documents (Environmental Impact Statements, Environmental Assessments), Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans, Mine Plans, and many other environmental compliance projects.

JBR’s GIS services include:

Site Suitability Analysis
JBR has created detailed site suitability models that take into account various factors and determine the best location to place a facility or to allow energy development over large areas. Our staff has the resources to provide services for major projects, having mapped National Forests and entire states.

Visibility Analysis
JBR has conducted a number of visual analyses for proposed projects such as power line construction and mining developments. Analyses range from determining how visible a new power line would be from roads or other vantage points to determining what an open pit mine development would look like. JBR uses ArcScene to create 3D renderings and produce "flyover" videos to predict how projects could impact visual resources.

Creation of Interactive Webmaps for Clients
JBR's GIS specialists create robust geodatabases to manage project data and then use these geodatabases to deploy custom webmaps showing project data that require only an internet connection and the a password to view. Known as a webmap, it is accessible to the client by clicking on a link. A webmap is a Google-Earth-like map that includes capabilities such as zooming, turning layers on and off, and "drawing" suggestions of sites that can be communicated to remote personnel. This dynamic map works far better than a static map (i.e., a PDF or hard-copy map) and provides more information in an easily accessible format. No GIS training is necessary to access or interpret the webmap.

Client Data Management Using a Secure Central Server
JBR’s team can collect and store data for clients on a secure central server which allows both clients and staff to access the latest information in real-time. This allows for efficient collection and updating of data and sharing of information, saving clients both time and money.

Programs currently used by JBR's GIS specialists include: ArcMap (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) Version 10; ArcMap Spatial/3D Analyst extensions; Xtools; Google Sketchup; ArcGIS Server; and AutoCAD Map 3D 2012.
