JBR cultural resources staff identified and evaluated cultural resources on a 4.3-acre parcel slated for development. Key Technology is planning to expand its campus onto an adjacent parcel that was previously the location of Fort Walla Walla’s Quartermaster Stables and the later location of McCaw Hospital. The archaeological survey and testing effort assisted the Port of Walla Walla and Key Technology in complying with Washington State Executive Order 05-05, the Washington State Environmental Policy Act, and the Washington State Archaeological Sites and Resources Act. The assessment included background and archival research documenting the previous locations of the buildings and their construction materials; historic military land use patterns; subsurface archaeological sampling; formal archaeological site testing and evaluation; artifact cataloguing and curation; preparation of technical reports; and tribal consultation assistance.
