Solid & Hazardous Waste Management Plan for a Mining Operation
JBR Environmental Consultants, Inc. prepared a Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Plan (SHWMP) for an in situ leach salt mining operation on the Colorado Plateau. JBR services included:
- On-site identification of waste streams and review of current management practices
- Characterization of wastes and generator status determination
- Development of:
- Waste management strategies
- Inspection and record-keeping procedures
- Contingency plan
- Training requirements and waste minimization strategies
- Preparation of a draft SHWMP
- Review of the plan with facility personnel for feasibility determination
- Incorporation of comments and procedural changes into the final SHWMP
- Implementation of the plan and training at the facility
The project had several challenges due to the potential amount of waste generated by in situ leaching and the location of nearby streams. JBR worked with facility professionals to produce a workable product; implementation of the SHWMP required many of JBR’s procedures and improvements. The client deemed the plan well organized, user-friendly, and applicable to the situation.
