REMEDIATION OF A FORMER GOLD MILL

JBR Environmental Consultants, Inc. (JBR) oversaw demolition activities at a former gold mill in Nevada's Great Basin. JBR conducted several inspections of the mill prior to the start of demolition and remediation process to identify all equipment, tanks, and other items that might require remediation prior to demolition. Numerous samples were collected from facilities to identify potential areas of concern. Using this information, JBR prepared a detailed work scope for the remediation contractor.

During remediation activities, JBR worked closely with a remediation contractor to identify materials for disposal and to determine the disposal options for the materials. JBR also developed Health and Safety Plans for each of the buildings slated for disposal (Grind Circuit, CIL, Carbon Strip, Refinery, and Neutralization),  and guidance letters for specific issues encountered including asbestos handling, “How clean is clean”, and mercury vapor monitoring. JBR conducted inspections of steel and equipment removed from all of the buildings to ensure that they met the “How clean is clean” criteria, prior to removal from the mine site. JBR, with assistance from the remediation contractor, tracked product and waste materials removed from the buildings prior to demolition.  JBR also signed off on all areas that were cleaned by Clean Harbors prior to demolition.
