JBR's Matt Setty Presented on the Rock Whitewater Park Project at the 2009 Nevada Water Resources Association

Rock Whitewater Park, Truckee River, Reno, Nevada

At the 2009 Nevada Water Resources Association Truckee River Symposium held at Desert Research Institute in Reno, NV on Tuesday November 3-5, Matthew Setty presented information on the Rock Whitewater Park Project. The City of Sparks constructed a whitewater park in the Truckee River. Five drop/pool structures were constructed consisting of large boulders and rock which are grouted in key areas to provide long-term stability. As part of the Army Corp 404 Permit, the Biological Opinion (BO) from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) provides guidance to the City to ensure that operation and maintenance activities are performed in a manner which avoids or reduces the impacts the project may have on Lahontan Cutthroat Trout (LCT).  Project permits required development and implementation of a Monitoring and Reporting Plan for the Rock Whitewater Park. JBR has developed the five year monitoring program, and is performing all monitoring. Monitoring elements include: fish passage including fish shocking and tagging, velocity profiling, aquatic and terrestrial habitat evaluations including macroinvertebrate sampling, water quality, structural stability including snorkeling survey, and sediment transport.
